Times Higher Education (THE) released World University Ranking 2021 late Wednesday evening. A total of record 63 Indian Universities qualifies for the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking (WUR) 2021. However, out of 63 universities, none of the Indian university could make it to the top 300.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has once again been ranked as the best Institute from India in THE world Univerisity Ranking. IISc Bengaluru was ranked in the range of 301-350, Last year too IISc Bengaluru secured the same position. Although it has slightly improved its score from 45.6 to 47.9.

In April 2020, Seven old IITs decided not to participate in Times Higher Education ranking citing parameters and transparency issues in the ranking process. After IISc Bengaluru, IIT Ropar and IIT Indore secured ranks within 500 globally. No other Indian University apart from 3 were able to be in top 500. IIT Ropar ranked 351-400 while IIT Indore ranked 401-500.
In April Seven IITs had released a joint statement stating, “The leading IITs i.e. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee have decided to not participate in any of the Times Higher Education (THE) – World University Rankings this year (2020). These IlTs will reconsider their decision next year if Times Higher Education is able to convince them about the parameters and transparency in their ranking process.”

15 Indian Universities which were ranked from 601-800 which includes Banaras Hindu Uninversity, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Hyderabad, IIIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad apart from Institute of Chemical Technology, University of Delhi, IISER Pune, IISER Kolkata, Jamia Milia University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, King George’s Medical University, Mahatma Gandhi University, Punjab University and Savitribai Phule Oune University and Thapar University.
NITs were not far behind in World University Ranking released by Times Higher Education. 2 NITs were able to make it to top 1000 universities in world. National Institute of Technology Rourkela and National Institute of Technology Silchar secured rank in the range of 801-1000. NIT Rourkela also secured 190th position in Asia University Ranking 2020 released in April 2020.
Apart from NIT SILCHAR & NIT Rourkela, NIT Trichy and VNIT NAGPUR were able to make it to the list. National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli & Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology Nagpur were ranked among the category of 1000+.

NIT Silchar Director Prof. Sivaji Bandyopadhyay sharing this news in a Facebook post said, “I am delighted to share that for the 1st time since the inception of NIT Silchar, we have been ranked INTERNATIONALLY FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME by the highly reputed Times Higher Education World University rankings with a GLOBAL RANK IN THE BAND OF 801-1000.”
