The Director of IIT Delhi V. Ramagopal Rao announced about the admission of students from various NITs  to the Ph.D programme at IIT Delhi. For which the minimal criteria is 8 CGPA at the end of 6th semester (3rd year). The students can directly get into Ph.D program,,es without qualifying GATE or any other national level exam. This admission policy will be implemented from academic session 2020-21.

Prof. Ramgopal Rao went on to say “NIT students, who have a CGPA of 8 and above in their third year and are interested in research will be able to get direct admission in IIT Delhi for completing their final year here. After that, they can continue to pursue their PhD in the institute.”

So for laying the foundation of this great opportunity, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and National Institute of Technology Trichy (NITT) have signed an MoU for collaboration on academic activities.

NIT Trichy becomes the third NIT to sign MoU with IIT Delhi after NIT Agartala and NIT Warangal.

The Mou or memorandum of understanding was signed by Prof V. Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi and Dr. Mini Shaji Thomas, Director, NIT Trichy.

This memorandum of understanding will facilitate direct admission of B.Tech students of NIT Trichy to IIT Delhi’s Ph.D programmes, this will not only help students to be step ahead of others but will also facilitate academic and research collaboration in the areas of mutual interest leading to exchange of faculty and students.

Dr. Mini Shaji Thomas, Director, NIT Trichy said, “The key feature of this MoU is the excellent opportunity for bright undergrad students for direct PhD admission at IIT Delhi. We are very positive that this MoU will encourage academic partnership and fruitful research collaborations between NITT and IIT Delhi. The Institute is looking forward to joint research projects and faculty exchange programmes.”

Prof V.Ramgopal Rao made visualised it as a great opportunity for the students and the faculty of both the institutions to work progressively as well as collectively in the area of Reasearch and Development.

He also quoted that “We would like to invite other NITs also to enter into similar academic partnership with IIT Delhi.”

  • Procedure for admission in PhD programmes:-

 The meritorious undergraduates of NIT Trichy will now be given a golden opportunity to conclude their final year (7th and 8th semester) aincluding their project work at IIT Delhi. Hence obtaining direct admission to PhD programmmes without thr need of qualifying GATE or any other National Level Examination.

The students need to submit their transcript, and other academic records and achievements and documentary evidence of any research or internship experience along with their application

With this the students are bound to outshine in their 7th and 8th semester to continue joining the PhD programme. This will also assist them in increasing their chances for the PMRF fellowship for PhD at IIT Delhi.

During their stay as visiting students, IIT Delhi will not be charging any academic fees, since they will be paying their regular academic fees at NIT Trichy. They will be provided staying facilities either on or off campus for one-year at IIT Delhi.

  • Students and Faculty Exchange through MoU

IIT Delhi and NIT Trichy will exchange B.Tech, dual degree M.Tech students, research scholars and faculty. The students under the exchange programme will be classified as special exchange students and they will be permitted to take courses on credit/audit, as well as participate in research activities/internships/project work. The selection and nomination of students will be open throughout the academic year.

  • Research Collaboration between the students and faculty of NIT Trichy and IIT Delhi.

The faculty from both the institutes will also collaborate in the joint submission of research project proposals, supervision of exchange students and joint research in the disciplines of mutual interest.
